Our History

Holy Spirit School opened its doors on September 15, 1965, under the auspices of the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell. The building was erected on the 7.5 acre complex and consisted of eight classrooms, a Library and Music room. Two single family homes were joined to serve as Holy Spirit's convent and housed the four nuns assigned to the school. Three nuns and five lay people, the first faculty, educated 359 students.

In 1975 the two remaining nuns of the original four moved to St. Michael's convent in Union, and the convent was transformed to house the first half-day kindergarten class and CCD offices. In 1984, Pre-K three and four-year-old half-day afternoon programs were added to accommodate the demands of the community. In 1987, the Pre-K three-year-old program was dropped and the four-year-old program was expanded to five afternoons per week and the kindergarten class was expanded to full days. The Pre-K program began full day sessions in 2008.

Holy Spirit School draws from the Union residents and all the surrounding towns. Throughout the years, students have come to us from any outlying towns to accommodate parents who worked in nearby areas who seek a Christ-centered/faith-based education for their children.

Throughout the years, Holy Spirit has worked hard to keep up with the ever increasing technology of the times. The Computer Lab has computers to satisfy a full class of students and a SmartBoard.  Also, Chromebooks and/or iPads are deployed to classrooms for specific lessons and/or projects.

Each classroom – grades Pre-K through 8 – is equipped with a SmartBoard and these are used to enhance delivery of curriculum and instruction within the daily curriculum at each grade level. During the 2016-17 school year, Holy Spirit School underwent an aggressive technology/phone systems upgrade and a new/robust and informative website was made public. Google Classroom has also been implemented as of the 2017-18 school year. The school’s Facebook page can be accessed via our website at . We are also on Twitter and Instagram.

Holy Spirit School is a very special place "Where all God's children come together."
